Gunter Deller

Born 1963 in Wasserlos, GER. He lives and works in Frankfurt am Main.

The white lump slowly dissolves on the tarmac, covering the hard gray surface with a creamy film. The white plastic bag flutters up into the gray skies and merges with the clouds (÷rtliche Betšubung (2006)).

Gunter Deller is an observer who permanently reinvents his surroundings, a documentary filmmaker whose interest is in the kind of things not visible in our direct reality. He is a collector of images indefatigably in search of what we do not see in our daily lives.

The short films he has been producing since the 1980s are surprising experimental collages and haunting compositions of images and sound. He uses the medium of film to transform his observations of people, animals and empty spaces into atmospheric arrangements that possess their own very special sensuality. He is not as much concerned with telling a story, as the world as Deller perceives it is rearranged in his films. It is pictorial thoughts that overlap with one another, coalesce and disintegrate into nothingness again. For many years now he has been working exclusively with an analog 16 mm Bolex cine camera.

Deller’s works are pictorial poems in the shape of films – he makes notes with his camera, transforming images into writing in light aimed at evoking various different associations and sequences of thoughts in the heads of his viewers. His film cuts disrupt our customary methods of seeing, producing new ways of viewing and interpreting things. External reality meets inner consciousness and everything in his films appears interconnected.
